Kellie Leitch (Conservative MP) is calling for a Canadian version of Trump’s ‘Extreme Vetting’ (say with your index finger touching your thumb to get the real Trump effect). Her plan has limited details just an intention of screening immigrants to avoid “anti-Canadian values”. It does not define Canadian values making it very difficult to implement.
Ask an immigrant to define Canadian values. The first one that comes to mind is acceptance. Kellie Leitch risks redefining a core Canadian value if she attempts to implement value testing on immigrants. Leitch has been quoted as saying “People who believe women are property…or gays or lesbians can be stoned…don’t share Canadian values”. We have laws in Canada and new immigrants should be aware of those laws and the consequences of breaking them. Canadian laws reflect Canadian values. Immigrants should be required to read and understand some of the basic rights that the law affords all people regardless of religion, sexual orientation or gender.
Canadians are a tolerant and kind people. They tend to give immigrants time to adjust. Screening immigrants by value testing would be shutting the door on people who want a better life without giving them a chance to become Canadian. Values reflect our culture and environment. Change the environment, habits will transform and eventually values will follow.
When asked what I love about Canada I often say I love the freedom of going to Shoppers or Walmart at 10:30 pm or to a Toy R us all night sale before Christmas. I am aware not afraid. Not having to worry about safety has changed my outlook and even my values. I am more open and accepting of others. Something that would not have happened if I did not change my environment by coming to Canada.
Change your mind, change the world.
