To all Canadians – natural and naturalised

I created this blog as a coping mechanism to understand my journey to becoming Canadian and to chart the way for others.

Granted, I started writing almost 12 years after migrating. It took me that long to find my bearings. Like many, I paid more car insurance at 37 with 20 years of driving experience than a 17-year-old boy who just got his G2 license. I also earned half of what a new graduate in finance would earn despite being UK qualified and having 15 years of experience in accounting.

Many years ago, we took our kids to Ottawa for the July 1st celebration. We lay on the grass in front of Parliament Hill and saw Mosaika light show.  Our kids were young and we had no idea how the future would unfold. At some point, I looked over at my husband and he was crying and I was crying. Somehow sitting on Parliament Hill that night – we knew we made the right decision coming to Canada and it would take awhile but everything was going to be fine.

This July will mark 13 years since we moved from the Caribbean to Canada. It is also almost a decade of being a citizen.  This year as Canada celebrates its 150 years –  I will be shedding my immigrant cloak for a maple mantle.  My blog will also adapt. I will still discuss issues that are important to new immigrants, but I will also examine current issues such as politics and education because it is important to all Canadians natural and naturalised.

Join me on my journey from Immigrant to Canadian.
